Eating a Vitamin and Using a Vitamin Are Different Steps

Consuming a vitamin, whether in food or a supplement, is only the first step in a longer process. Before your body can actually use it, that vitamin has to survive digestion, get absorbed through the intestinal wall, travel through the bloodstream, and in many cases, get converted into an active form your cells can actually use. Each of these steps is a place where the amount that started on your plate and the amount your body ultimately uses can diverge.

Digestion: The First Filter

Digestion breaks down food and, in the process, releases the vitamins bound within it. This is part of why whole-food vitamin sources and isolated supplements can behave differently, food provides a vitamin embedded in a complex matrix of fiber, fat, and other compounds that affect how efficiently it's released and absorbed, while a supplement delivers the compound in a more concentrated, standalone form.

Absorption: Getting Through the Intestinal Wall

Once released during digestion, a vitamin needs to cross the lining of the small intestine to enter the bloodstream. Fat-soluble vitamins require the presence of dietary fat and bile to be absorbed efficiently, which is why they're better absorbed alongside a meal containing some fat. Water-soluble vitamins generally absorb more readily without this requirement, though some, like B12, still require a specific transport mechanism, in B12's case, a protein called intrinsic factor, to be absorbed properly.

Transport and Conversion: Becoming Usable

Many vitamins don't arrive in their final, active form. As covered in more detail in our guide to vitamin D forms, some vitamins undergo further conversion after absorption, in the liver, kidneys, or other tissues, before they become biologically active. This is a normal, expected part of how the body handles many nutrients, not a sign that something has gone wrong.

Why Absorption Efficiency Varies From Person to Person

Individual absorption efficiency depends on a range of factors: age, digestive health, certain medications, genetic variation, and what else is consumed at the same time. This is part of why general nutrition guidance is necessarily broad, and why specific concerns about whether you're absorbing a particular vitamin adequately are worth raising with a healthcare provider who can assess your individual situation, rather than relying solely on general information.
